    Chuck Casada - Staff Writer

My Living History interest like many of the generation born in the 1950's was fueled by the wonder of Television and watching Walt Disney's- Davey Crockett, and Fess Parker as Daniel Boone. Since an early age my desire to go back to a simpler time has been a goal in life. I learned and sharpened woodland skills while in the Boy Scouts and while there attained the Rank of Eagle Scout. After High School and service to my Country, I began work to finish my Collage degree. Later I graduated from Ball State University with a B.S. in United States History, World History and minor area of study in Geography and Physical Education. It was about this same time that I saw the movie- Mountain Men. Watching Charlton Heston and Brian Keith as Freetrappers inspired me to become a "Mountain Man." The reading began and slowly I gathered the clothing and equipment. Not really knowing anyone else did this type of activity I was as the old timers put it- on my own hook. Ever so slowly things changed. I learned of different rendezvous and shoots. I made lots of mistakes just like everyone else. I suppose I bought enough 'wrong' plunder to fill a garage. However then one year I learned of the Feast of the Hunters Moon. Here I discovered there was plenty of local history right where I lived. Because Indiana is pretty flat, and I don't ride a horse, it did not make sense to be a Trapper of the mid 1820's in the American West. So the decision was made-I went Eastern. Because of that change I now this day have a dual persona. I am a Private in Moses Hazen's Company of Rogers Rangers-circa 1758. Plus a common Civilian Militiaman with Conrad Weiser's Berk's County Militia- The Heidleburg People.

I try to make as much of my own clothing and equipment as possible. When I can not, I turn to the best artisans to acquire what I need. There are some advantages making your own clothing and kit. I have learned to sew; my clothing is exactly what I want, fits well and the pride of making some item yourself is very rewarding to me. Time alone in nature's wonderland regardless of the time of year is what I enjoy most. I do attend some of the larger events when possible and go on local scouts and treks with others. In the real world of today I am a pretty typical person. I am married to the most wonderful woman in the world who encourages my appreciation of life in the past. I have 2 beautiful daughters who share their fathers love of history. By Trade I am a Professional Firefighter for the city of Muncie, Indiana.
